Associations between LDL/HDL-cholesterol ratio and thoracic and abdominal aortic atherosclerosis assessed by MRI

چکیده
Background Recently, the LDL/HDL-cholesterol ratio has become recognized as a stronger risk predictor of cardiovascular diseases than each lipid parameter. However, the association between LDL/HDL-cholesterol ratio and aortic atherosclerosis has not been elucidated yet. Using MRI, we investigated the associations between thoracic and abdominal aortic atherosclerosis and LDL/HDL-cholesterol ratio as well as LDLand HDL-cholesterol levels.

Relationships of abdominal obesity and hyperinsulinemia to angiographically assessed coronary artery disease in men with known mutations in the LDL receptor gene.
BACKGROUND Patients with a mutation in the LDL receptor gene (familial hypercholesterolemia, or FH) are characterized by substantial elevations in plasma LDL cholesterol and are at higher risk of developing coronary artery disease (CAD). Correlates of abdominal obesity may also contribute to the risk of ischemic cardiac events. Whether the hyperinsulinemic-insulin-resistant state of abdominal o...
متن کامل17beta-Estradiol but not the phytoestrogen naringenin attenuates aortic cholesterol accumulation in WHHL rabbits.
The effects of 17beta-estradiol (17beta-E(2)) or the phytoestrogen naringenin on spontaneous atherosclerosis were studied in 36 ovariectomized homozygous Watanabe heritable hyperlipidemic (WHHL) rabbits receiving a semisynthetic control diet; this diet added 0.0040% 17beta-E(2;) or 0.20% naringenin, for 16 weeks. The uterine weight was increased (P < 0.001) and the concentration of estrogen rec...

We examined the effects of breast and formula feeding during infancy on the serum lipoproteins and on atherosclerosis in young adult baboons. Baboons were breast-fed (n = 13) or formula-fed (n = 32) until weaning at 16 weeks of age and thereafter they were fed a diet containing 1.7 mg cholesterol/kcal and 40% of calories as lard until 5 years of age. At 12 weeks of age, breast-fed baboons had h...

PURPOSE To determine the predictive value of serum lipid levels on the development of later cardiovascular events after abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) surgery. METHODS A total of 101 patients under 70 undergoing an elective AAA surgery were divided into the following two groups: 1) those who developed later cardiovascular events after AAA surgery, including cerebral infarction (n = 4), cathe...
متن کاملIncreased low-density lipoprotein oxidation and impaired high-density lipoprotein antioxidant defense are associated with increased macrophage homing and atherosclerosis in dyslipidemic obese mice: LCAT gene transfer decreases atherosclerosis.
BACKGROUND Obesity-associated dyslipidemia in humans is associated with increased low-density lipoprotein (LDL) oxidation. Mice with combined leptin and LDL receptor deficiency are obese and show severe dyslipidemia and insulin resistance. We investigated the association between oxidation of apolipoprotein B-containing lipoproteins, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) antioxidant defense, and athero...
